My wife and I spent Christmas Eve at the movies, and while most people were piling in to see Avatar or The Whale, we purchased our tickets for the latest low-budget horror film to cause a stir, The Mean One. From what we had heard The Mean One was The Grinch with a slasher spin. With popcorn obtained, we couldn’t be more excited to take on what was to be one of the weirdest and wackiest parodies in recent times.
For those that aren’t aware, XYZ Films picked up The Mean One for a December 2022 release, and XYZ Films' Manager of Acquisitions was extremely excited to snag it saying, "As a passionate fan of seasonal horror (and the Terrifer films), The Mean One is exactly the kind of film that lands on my personal nice list.” He goes on to say that the “movie is a stunningly great time” and while that’s a nice thought, critics haven’t exactly agreed.
While the film does have a few more lows than highs, my wife and I had a great time at the cinema. And while David Howard Thornton delivers another over-the-top performance, it was the Ronda Rousey doppelganger, Krystle Martin, that impressed me from the start to finish. Not only was she able to kick ass, but she also perfectly captured the heart of Cindy… You-Know-Who.
Krystle Martin is an actor and stunt performer based in Los Angeles, CA. She has performed in numerous live stunt shows, including global tours with Marvel Universe Live! as Captain Marvel, Disneyland's Avengers Assemble, and Universal Studios' Special Effects Show, where she performed over 400 full-body fireburns. So when I had the chance to discuss everything from Ryan Murphy to The Grinch that stole Christmas, I jumped at the opportunity!
The Mean One continues to add dates and showtimes throughout the United States, so be sure to check their website and/or Facebook to see if they’ve added a screening near you! This “One” is meant to be experienced with a crowd, so don’t be left out in the cold, check it out while you can!
