It's funny to think that I wasn't a fan of Patrick Lussier's until I heard him on The Movie Crypt podcast. I mean, I wasn't NOT a fan of his either, but it was hearing about his career from the man himself that really sold me on the guy. He worked on Doctor Who, he made his directorial debut with Prophecy 3, and he nearly directed Halloween III, the sequel to Rob Zombie's 2007 reboot of the Halloween franchise. Simply put, he's interesting.
Lussier has worked as a film editor on most of director Wes Craven's later films, including Wes Craven's New Nightmare, Vampire in Brooklyn, Red Eye, and all four entries in the Scream tetralogy. Lussier does have a voice of his own, but it's hard to shake working with one of the masters of horror. While it shows in his work, being molded by the best isn't a bad thing.
In 2010, Lussier directed the supernatural road action film Drive Angry. He co-wrote the screenplay with his previous collaborator Todd Farmer, of My Bloody Valentine 3D. And while I haven't seen Drive Angry, I have seen everything else that is mentioned above. Drive Angry didn't interest me, but after seeing Trick, and hearing first hand about the love and care that he and Farmer put into the film, Drive Angry quickly jumped to the top of my watch pile. The duo is back hoping to deliver a new Halloween staple, Trick!
On Halloween night, Patrick “Trick” Weaver massacred his classmates at a costume party. After being arrested, he managed to escape police custody, but not before being shot five times by Detective Mike Denver. Everyone believes Trick must be dead, but when a masked killer reappears the following Halloween, and every Halloween after that, they realize the nightmare is not over.
Trick features Omar Epps, Ellen Adair, Kristina Reyes, Jamie Kennedy, and Tom Atkins. RLJE Films will release the horror film Trick in Theaters, On Demand and Digital HD on October 18, 2019. So, check it out on the 18th, it'll definitely get you in the Halloween spirit!
