We Are Zombies (2023)

When the dead are back, what do we do with them? RKSS, the team behind Turbo Kid and Summer of '84, offers a fresh take on the undead in the SCREAMBOX Original We Are Zombies, streaming everywhere on August 13.

The music in We Are Zombies is so exceptional that I wish it could follow me around and score my life. It perfectly complements the film's unique blend of horror and comedy, adding an extra layer of fun to the experience. RKSS has created an engaging world where zombies are a part of everyday life. The practical effects and makeup are outstanding, making the zombies look both awesome and gnarly. The characters are well-developed and contribute significantly to the film's charm.

The humor in We Are Zombies is similar to Shaun of the Dead. Although some jokes don't land, the sheer volume of good ones and the engaging story more than make up for the misses. Fans of 30 Minutes or Less, Sex Drive, and Zombieland will feel right at home with this film's comedic style.

RKSS doesn't disappoint, delivering a film full of heart and ingenuity. Their love for practical effects shines through, making the zombies look impressively realistic and adding to the overall immersive experience. The story follows three slackers who, in a city teeming with non-cannibal zombies, must fight small-time crooks and a nefarious megacorporation to save their kidnapped grandma. The narrative is fun and fresh, though the film feels a little short, leaving me wanting more.

We Are Zombies reminded me of a movie I'd randomly stumble upon at Alamo Drafthouse—unexpectedly delightful with plenty of heart. It's a film that promises a good time, and RKSS fans will be eagerly anticipating their next project.

We Are Zombies is a fun, inventive take on the zombie genre. Despite its short length, the film is packed with humor, great characters, and impressive practical effects. It's a worthy addition to SCREAMBOX's library of unique horror content. RKSS has once again proven their ability to create films that are not only entertaining but also filled with heart. I can't wait to see what they come up with next.
