Out of Control (2025)

Out of Control, a 13-minute spy thriller directed by Norwegian filmmaker Ole A. Hagen, delivers a fast-paced, visually engaging short film that leaves its audience intrigued but wanting more. With an accomplished director at the helm—known for his multi-award-winning storytelling across 20 countries—this short offers glimpses of brilliance despite some shortcomings.

The story follows Anna (Ágota Dunai) as she makes a significant discovery in the Middle East, only to find herself ensnared by a powerful organization after coming into possession of a mysterious necklace. What unfolds is a classic spy-chase film as Anna struggles to uncover the secrets behind the necklace and reclaim control of her life.

Hagen’s knack for crafting suspenseful narratives shines through in Anna’s journey, which is bolstered by Ágota Dunai’s earnest performance. Her portrayal of a woman caught between fear and determination adds depth to the high-stakes plot. Dariia Kozakova also deserves praise for her portrayal of Eva, a spy whose believability and charisma make her a standout character—although her limited screen time feels like a missed opportunity to expand the film's emotional core.

The film benefits from a solid musical score that enhances its tension and urgency, with thoughtful choices that complement the action. However, it falters in its visual execution. While the use of stock footage helps establish the setting and tone, it detracts from the film’s richness, leaving viewers wishing for more original, immersive shots that could have elevated its production value.

The screenplay, while serviceable, includes moments of repetitive or unnecessary dialogue, which slightly hinder the pacing of such a brief runtime. There are also technical inconsistencies, such as characters appearing semi-transparent, which may distract discerning viewers.

Despite these flaws, Out of Control succeeds in delivering the thrills expected from a spy story. Hagen’s use of music as inspiration for crafting captivating tales is evident, and his direction keeps the narrative moving at a brisk pace. While the film doesn’t reinvent the genre, it offers an entertaining glimpse into a world of intrigue and danger.

For fans of quick, action-packed spy films, Out of Control is worth the watch. With some refinement in visual storytelling and character development, it could easily evolve into a richer and more memorable piece. As it stands, it’s a promising effort that showcases Ole A. Hagen’s storytelling potential.
