Indie Filmmaker Daniel Knight Announces Psychological Thriller Perplection, Set to Begin Filming

Independent filmmaker and longtime actor-producer Daniel Knight has officially announced the upcoming production of his psychological thriller Perplection, marking his debut as a writer and director. With principal photography scheduled to begin in May 2025, the film will be shot in Palm Desert and Manhattan Beach, California, with additional locations under consideration.

Blurring the lines between reality and imagination, Perplection follows clinical psychologist Viana Young as she spirals into a fractured world where moments of vibrant color clash against eerie black-and-white shadows. As these distortions escalate, she is forced to question whether she is losing her grip on reality or if a mysterious presence is infiltrating her mind. Combining elements of psychological horror and surrealist filmmaking, the film draws inspiration from The Twilight Zone, Dementia, Shutter Island, and Bunny Lake is Missing, while paying homage to the artistic techniques of David Lynch, Ingmar Bergman, and Andrei Tarkovsky.

"As someone who has spent years in front of the camera, stepping into the role of writer-director is both thrilling and deeply personal," said Knight. "With Perplection, I want to take audiences on a journey into the subconscious, where reality is fluid and perception is constantly shifting. This film is about fear—not just of the unknown, but of the self."

Knight will star in the film alongside Kristina Baryshnikova, with additional casting announcements expected soon. The production team is currently finalizing the crew and technical aspects to ensure the film’s unique visual aesthetic is fully realized.

With its bold narrative and striking imagery, Perplection is already generating buzz within the independent film community. The film is being positioned for a 2026 festival run, with planned submissions to Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW, as well as prestigious international showcases such as Berlinale, Locarno, and Cannes’ Short Film Corner.

More details, including exclusive behind-the-scenes content, will be released in the coming months.
